Principal Modeling Engineer

Full-Time, Salary Range: $90,000-$150,000

Position Description

The Principal Modeling Engineer will be a prime contributor to Matrix Sensors’ development of Direct Air Capture (DAC) materials, systems, and services. The successful candidate will work with across-disciplinary project team spanning multiple engineering and science disciplines to deliver innovative solutions for our customers. We seek a candidate with experience across a wide range of scientific subjects, the capacity to think expansively on the inherent materials and system challenges, and then drive the innovations into practical systems that will bring impactful improvements to our customers. This position is in San Diego, CA.

The successful candidate will use their in-depth knowledge and experience of both analytical and computational modeling methods to develop material models from basic measurements. They will work collaboratively with experts in chemistry and engineering to gain deeper insights into challenging problems and drive innovative solutions.

Specific Responsibilities include:
Technical
• Develop models coupling multi-component gas flows to heat and mass transfer in various length scales
• Develop mathematical models of multi-component gas flows in porous and bulk and thin film media
• Detailed engineering design based on diffusion/adsorption modeling
• Verification/validation of computational and analytical models with experimental data
• Analyze data generated by test stands and prototypes

Leadership
• Serve as the technical point of contact on DAC system function and operation, presenting results and recommending future work
• Document and communicate findings and results, including progress reports, final reports, presentations, and intellectual property disclosures and patent applications
• Work effectively and collaboratively with researchers and support staff at varying levels within the organization; oversee, mentor, and train lower-level staff
• Able to multi-task and quickly adjust to new information

Perferred Qualifications:
· Broad experience with a variety of material classes (i.e. ceramics, oxidation-resistant coatings, soft materials like polymers, and bio-based materials)
· Familiarity with column breakthrough experiments
· Experience with hands-on laboratory techniques
· Basic understanding of techno-economic analyses

Required Qualifications:
· MS or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Physical Chemistry, or Physics with at least 4 years of experience
· Experience with computational modeling using software such as Aspen Custom Modeler, gPROMS, Python, COMSOL, or other related tools.
· Fundamental understanding of multi-gas adsorption theory across a broad range of materials
Excellent oral and written communication skills
· Must be able to commit 40 hours minimum in-person during operating hours (Monday-Friday, 8am-6pm) and occasional weekends
· Must be eligible to work in the United States
